Toronto’s most perplexingly named street is not just a heavily used route into the city’s core; for years, Avenue Road was actually considered a minor highway, known by its alpha-numeric designation 11a, or Yonge Street’s sidekick. Besides the two-step detour around Upper Canada College, its breadth, together with skinny sidewalks, ensures that 11a continues to operate much more like a full-blown highway than other downtown arterials like Danforth Avenue.
